Interest in Media

I am interested in media as a omnipresent factor in the lives of my students. I teach Latin, but I've always been interested in aspects of technology and how technology influences how people think and gather information. Since media is now so intertwined in new forms of technology, my curiosity naturally runs into media. Also, I'd just like to be more conscious about media in general. Since it's so pervasive as to be nearly invisible, I'd like to be able to see the fnords.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I'm going to make these interests into a project. Yep.

  1. "Fnord"?

Subvertising meme. Neat term - new to me.

Why not combine your "language of the image," as applied to ancient relics, with a comparative study of modern corporate "image vocab"?

  2. I think you're getting there... go build something in your backyard and it'll probably come to you full on! ;)

  3. James, these are my thoughts & responses to your posts on readings # 1 & 2. I too am anticipating what Carr is setting us up for. It's my first time reading the book too. Your criticism of his accuracy on language rules vis a vis your own deep knowledge of ancient language is appreciated. For me, much of what Carr says still makes sense simply from my media literacy perspective - knowing and agreeing with McLuhan's assertions on each medium's bias and the evolution of technolgy and its associated influence on language and culture. Your reaction to McLaren on language use - in your words, for "belonging conformity" - was well put! Lastly, MCP? Tron? I'm lost... A Star Wars reference?? :\
